The Advanced Light Source (ALS) division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is accepting applications for a Division Deputy for Operations to serve as the Chief Operating Officer for the ALS. This critical position has the challenge and opportunity to be a part of a world-renowned center for scientific research. The primary role is to manage the overall operation of the ALS. High-impact responsibilities include handling business, project and facility management and long-range planning related to Berkeley Lab's mission. Will also assume the day-to-day responsibilities of the division director, as needed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manage the overall operation of the ALS, including accelerator and beamline operations, user activities, safety and environmental protection activities, and projects.
  • Manage the Laboratory Directed R&D process for the division.
  • Business management: budgeting and staff projections, field work proposal submission, logistics, human resources (HR) issues, and administration.
  • Handle HR issues related to scientific staff, including oversight of the annual performance and salary management process.
  • Supervise and handle work oversight of the division's business manager and project/facility manager and their teams.
  • Act as spokesperson to the Department of Energy (DOE) and external agencies for ALS business and project management, including representation on national committees and reviews.
  • Collaborate in the preparation and presentations for the triennial DOE / Basic Energy Sciences reviews of the ALS.
  • Participate in division-specific safety committee meetings.
  • Report results of ALS program and/or your own professional research to the scientific community, including publications in refereed journals.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Substantial experience managing a scientific program/project and knowledge of a national scientific user facility
  • Proven leadership ability and the ability to build consensus and manage through to execution
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams (e.g., accelerator physicists, beam line scientists, engineers, technical support staff, administrative and business management staff, collaborating scientists, and Laboratory management)
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, retain, and develop staff
  • Substantial knowledge of the synchrotron radiation community is highly preferred.
  • Experience with financial and budget oversight and development
  • Status as an active scientist or scientific manager with a Ph.D. in Physics or related field and/or equivalent experience


NOTES: This position may be hired at the Staff Scientist or Senior Scientist level. In addition to the above qualifications, only a candidate who has established an internationally recognized scientific program will be hired at the Senior Scientist level.
